Its members, Marcella and Eliana Guttmann, incorporated elements of the theater
Café for Fun has just been opened on the small Rua Álvares Anes, between the districts of Pinheiros and Vila Madalena, and is already one of the hippest spots in the city.
In addition to the specialty coffees served in the house, curated by Ton Rodrigues – one of the partners of Sofá Café and creator of True Coffee Brasil, which produces cold brew coffee – the coffee shop is full of references to Brazilian theater, such as lighting and decoration.
It is little wonder, really. Marcella is a cultural producer and daughter of actress Eliana Guttmann, famous for her outstanding roles as in the feature film Olga (Globo Filmes), in the play “O Enigma Blavatsky,” and in various soap operas on TV Globo and SBT.
The family is of Jewish origin and loves gastronomy, to the point where Eliana launched the cookbook “As Delícias da Cozinha Judaica” by Editora Globo. Marcella holds a degree in Social Sciences from PUC and in Law from UNIP. Working for 22 years as a cultural producer, she was diagnosed about two years ago with a Hodgkin’s lymphoma and had to undergo a bone marrow transplant. “It was a turning point in my life. These moments are always an opportunity for us to look and to rescue ourselves. From that moment on, the desire to work in cuisine emerged,” she confided.
Her brother and sister-in-law were already passionate about specialty coffees, so the decision to open a coffee shop focusing on the subject was a natural step. “When I found the spot, the entire deal was conceived in my head,” she recalled.
She toured around the main coffee shops in São Paulo to learn more, took courses, and met Ton Rodrigues. “Ton was very important for the coffee shop, curating the coffees and developing the two exclusive blends of the house: one is aimed at filter coffees, with citrus notes of tangerine and brown sugar, while the other is aimed at espresso with milky notes, with hints of almonds and chocolate,” described Marcella.
The Jewish roots, in turn, appear in Café for Fun with the famous bureks, a puff pastry of Bulgarian origin stuffed with potato or ricotta with spinach.
Parklet and cultural events
On the outside, the coffee shop will be given, in April, a 10-meter parklet, thanks to Lincoln Paiva, the forerunner of the idea in Brazil. “With the parklet, Café for Fun will promote cultural activities such as saraus, musical performances, and a live library with a space for donating books that can be read on the spot or taken home.
