Academia do Café, a renowned space, in Minas Gerais style, dedicated entirely to coffee, opened its second operating unit in May of this year, the first unit in the city of São Paulo. This place previously was where Ekoa Café used to be, it seriously incorporates the idea of the place being some sort of “coffee college”, also working as a café, a place for courses and workshops, and the sale of coffee-related products.

Sao Paulo’s unit was created due to a partnership between the owners of Belo Horizonte’s Academia do Café, Bruno Souza and his wife Débora Souza, with the owners of the former Ekoa Café, Elio Asano, Renato Gyotoku and Ricardo Kobayashi. Bruno is one of the great names of Brazilian special coffee; He is the 4th generation of his family producing the grain, is Q-Grader licensed since 2007 and president of BECCOR (Brazilian Estates Café Corporation), which exports Brazilian specialty coffees to the United States.

Bruno and Débora inaugurated the first Academia do Café (Coffee Academy) in 2011, aiming to recover the Brazilian’s coffee image abroad, creating a space that brought together a laboratory to meet the demands of the market and a training center for coffee professionals. In the café, 70% of the grains used are from Fazenda Esperança, owned by Bruno and Débora, located in the Campos Altos city, situated amidst the Cerrado ecoregion of Minas Gerais. They also work with grains from the Minas Gerais’ Southern Region and from the Espírito Santo State as well, all these grains are exportation type.

At the Academia do Café, the coffees are made on espresso machines (made in a La Marzocco), H606 Vario, Aeropress drippers, Clever or French Press. In addition to serving Macchiatos, Cappuccinos, Lattes and Mochas, there are also iced coffees options, such as Frapês and the Afogatto, an espresso with an ice cream ball inside.

Introducing the Brazilian special coffees universe for the public and highlighting the name of our country in the international scenario, the consolidated Academia do Café seeks in São Paulo to maintain its excellence standard achieved in Minas Gerais.
