Vanusia Nogueira is the new Executive Director of the ICO

Brazilian Vanusia Nogueira is the new executive director of the International Coffee Organization. The decision was taken by the member countries of the main global coffee institution on February 9th and 10th, and they held the vote during the 131st Session of the International Coffee Council.

With a candidacy based on consensus by the public and private sectors of the country, which had the support of Brazilian diplomacy during the campaign, Vanusia’s election to the main post of global coffee farming results from the work carried out, mainly, as director of the Brazilian Association of Specialty Coffees. (BSCA) and in several international forums, such as Specialty Coffee Association(SCA),World Coffee Producers Forum (WCPF), Rainforest Alliance,Alliance for Coffee Excellence (ACE), among others.

“It was an honor to see the recognition of my work and to have my candidacy endorsed, both by the private sector and by the institutions of the Brazilian government.”, comments the new executive of the Organization.

Being the director of BSCA for 25 years Vanusia has promoted Brazilian coffees in the country and abroad, highlighting the quality and sustainability of production, contributing to the consolidation of the national product in traditional partners and to the opening of new markets to Brazilian beans, that delight new buyers with diversity and excellence.

She also led the work for the implementation of the sectoral project “Brazil. The Coffee Nation”, in 2008. developed in partnership with the Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency (ApexBrasil), which focuses on the commercial promotion of Brazilian coffee in the external market.

According to Vanusia, leading the world’s main coffee organization will also involve presenting a new direction for the entire global coffee industry and she believes that the expertise absorbed in her personal and professional life dealing with coffee, especially5 in the more than two decades dealing with special coffees, will be essential.

“We will seek sectoral coordination to work on priority issues such as prosperous income and well-being to cover costs and allow producers a decent life; increasing market transparency; propose and implementing global financing policies and mechanisms; and generate focus on production and sustainable supply, as well as responsible consumption”, she reveals.

BRIEF  CURRICULUM
Being a daughter and granddaughter of coffee producers and traders, Vanusia Nogueira has a PhD in Business Administration, with a focus on Marketing, from National University of Rosario (Argentina). Graduated in Information Technology (IT) and Management from Pontífica Universidade Católica of Rio de Janeiro (PUC-RJ), she has a master’s degree in Management and Advanced Project Management from Fundação Getúlio Vargas (FGV), in addition to numerous international specialization courses in Finance, Relationship Management (CRM), IT, among others, completed in the United States, Germany and Brazil.

ABOUT THE ICO
The International Coffee Organization was established in London in 1963, after a recommendation of the United Nations, due to the great economic importance of the commodity. The entity administers the International Coffee Agreement, the last update of which has been in force since February 2nd, 2011. It is the main intergovernmental institution for the sector and brings together governments of exporting and importing nations to face the challenges of global coffee production, through cooperation International. Its member countries represent 98% of production and 67% of world consumption of the product.
