In Itajubá, in the south of Minas Gerais, the special coffee scene is booming: check it out here
The friendly city of Itajubá is known for its strong university movement and the effervescent setting of specialty coffees. Proof of this is the work of Juliana Ganan, Bica Café, and Luís Pereira Villela, the micro-refectory and cafeteria Pereira Villela. Both are great friends and partners and move the passion for specialty coffees by spreading excellent microbatches in coffee shops all over Brazil.
Luis Gabriel Pereira Villela is the representative of the fourth generation of the coffee family. Owners of two properties (São Jorge Farm & São José Farm) in the municipality of Jesuânia, they produce about 30% of specialty coffees in its 60 hectares. The crop is managed by Luís’s brother, Delmar da Costa Villela.
Luís has worked with roasting since he was 14 years old, along with his father. After learning to classify and taste the grain, he fell in love with the universe of specialty coffees. Currently, working with his small Probat, he provides specialty coffees to coffee shops throughout Brazil. “We only work with microbatches of specialty coffees from family farms and also from other producers in the region”, he explains..
In addition to the roasting, there is a cafeteria, which is very tastefully decorated. In fact, it is in Itajubá but could be anywhere in the world, thanks to the ambiance, quality of service and, especially, the cafes it serves. All grains are roasted there and prepared in traditional methods or cooked in Hario. Serving around 80 cups a day, the house is always full of customers, mostly students and university professors looking for a delicious special coffee. The day we were there, Luís had the place full and yet served us with great sympathy.
