He is the first Latin to win the International Championship

Remy Molina won the “Coffee Masters New York” championship, held on October 12-14 at the Metropolitan Pavilion in New York City. Molina competed with 14 of the best professionals in the world, having only five years of experience in the world of specialty coffees.

His first job in the area was behind the counter of a French boulangerie and is currently a barista professor at the Specialty Coffee Association in Costa Rica.

Using a coffee from his country, La Minilla, originally from one of the country’s most famous producing regions, the West Valley, the barista won by reinterpreting the classic “Old Fashioned.”

His drink was inspired by the invention of cocktails during the Dry Law period, using the same tricks that bartenders at the time used to mask the low quality of the available distillates. The first “Old Fashioneds” used cognac instead of whiskey. Remy, in his presentation, made an infusion of ground coffee with the famous brandy Rémy Martin VSOP, to make the base of his drink.

“My name is Remy because of the iconic Rémy Martin brand. And with it, I won the championship,” he celebrated. Remy also took home a prize of $ 5,000 in cash and $ 15,000 in Slayer Espress brand products, plus a Mahlkoning grinder.

The next edition of the championship will take place in London, from 28 to 31 March 2019.
